Man with ‘Muslim’ name shot in Indian state of Bihar, told to go to Pakistan

Patna: A Muslim villager in Bihar was shot after revealing his name, in yet another hate crime in the state.

###

The incident took place in Kumbhi village of Begusarai where firebrand Giriraj Singh, candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party, has been declared elected.

###

He defeated Left candidate Kanhaiya Kumar by more than 450,000 votes.

###

Mohammad Qasim, a resident of Begusarai district, had gone out on his bike to sell detergent powder on Sunday when a local youth identified as Rajiv Yadav asked his name.

######

“The moment I revealed my name, he started hurling abuses at me and then asked what I was doing here,” Qasim said.

###

“He said: ‘You should have gone to Pakistan,’” Qasim added.

###

“Then he fired at me and the bullet hit my back.

###

“He was loading another bullet into his rifle when I pushed him away and fled the scene,” the victim is heard saying in video footage which has gone viral.

###

Qasim said he had to leave his bicycle behind as he fled the scene.

###

According to the victim, no villager came to his rescue when he was attacked.

###

He said the local village council chief also didn’t extend any support, when he approached him for help.

###

Finally, he rushed to the police who admitted him to the local hospital and registered a case.

###

Police are, however, yet to arrest the absconding accused.

###

According to the victim, the accused was drunk at the time of attack.

###

“We have registered the case and raids are being conducted to arrest the absconding accused,” local district superintendent of police Avakash Kumar told journalists on Monday.
