John Cena’s Rumored Smackdown Return Date Possibly Revealed

As mentioned earlier in the week, there have been talks in WWE to have John Cena return soon to Smackdown. The show has been struggling in the ratings ever since the Superstar Shakeup, and WWE is really hoping to change that. Despite his numerous commitments in Hollywood at the moment, Cena has recently made comments in interviews that WWE will always be his home until they decide that they no longer need him. Well, turns out that they need him. John Cena may very well be set to return later on this summer.
Cena is currently advertised to return on the July 4th edition of Smackdown from the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. The July 4th date does seem like an appropriate date for Cena to come back on, John Cena has always been portrayed as a great, all-American hero throughout his career. Cageside Seats first reported that Cena was coming back due to WWE panicking about their low ratings, some of which is likely due to the NBA Playoffs dominating television at the moment. It is worth noting that last year’s Independence Day edition of Raw only did 2.6 million viewers, and Cena was advertised for that show in advance.
John Cena could very well be a tremendous boost to Smackdown, which lost some steam ever since Cena and some other stars left the brand shortly after Wrestlemania. Keep in mind that Cena would be returning much earlier than expected here, and likely has a ton of work left to be done in Hollywood. This would mean that Cena probably would not be competing on Smackdown every single week, but you never know what kind of schedule that “The Champ” is willing to put himself through. With The Miz and Maryse gone, it’s unclear what Cena would be doing if he were to return on this show, but expect to see some sort of new program with Cena begin if he does come back on Independence Day.
