mobanmarketNEW YORK — Mayor Bill de Blasio’s nascent presidential campaign might get a boost from Gloria Steinem. The feminist icon said the mayor is on her short list of preferred candidates for the White House as the Democratic field stands about two dozen strong.
“Mayor de Blasio is among my top four choices for president and the only male human being who is on that list,” Steinem said Tuesday at a news conference where she endorsed de Blasio’s proposal to require businesses to give employees at least two weeks of paid personal time.
Steinem didn’t say who is competing with de Blasio for her backing. But her endorsement would lend some cachet to his presidential bid, which has struggled to find support among Democratic voters.
Steinem, a prominent feminist activist and co-founder of Ms. magazine, endorsed then-City Council Speaker Christine Quinn over de Blasio in the 2013 mayoral race.
But she has since gotten behind some of de Blasio’s initiatives. The mayor appointed her to an honorary seat on his Commission for Gender Equity and she reportedly praised his effort to guarantee paid parental leave for some city workers.
Steinem and de Blasio both endorsed Hillary Clinton for president in 2016 over U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is now making a second run at the Democratic White House nomination.
