Zlatan Ibrahimovic was in the headlines today in the English media following a story from Sky Sports that suggested that the PSG man has indicated a willingness to join Premier League side Manchester United in the summer, but only if Louis van Gaal is no longer at the club.
For reasons discussed here, we have largely discredited the report.
However, we thought we would take a second look at the situation this evening with a perspective from the French side of the Channel.
According to L’Équipe this morning, the only Premier League side to have had anything close to meaningful dialogue with Zlatan Ibrahimovic is Manchester United.
There is also little doubt that the eventual appointment of José Mourinho as the Red Devils’s future manager would help their pursuit of the Swedish international, who remains more impressioned by José Mourinho than virtually any of the other managers that he has served under during his already long and illustrious career.
Chelsea however are also monitoring the situation.
In short, you are not Zlatan Ibrahimovic, we are not Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and he has almost certainly not made a decision with regards to his future yet. This is a man who has been striving after the Champions League trophy throughout his career and who faces the most realistic chance of achieving that goal than he has had in little over five years.
That is his focus.
However, if he decides that he wants to move to the Premier League when this season is over, Manchester United’s early moves in these past weeks will give them some form of head start when the more heavy courting process begins next month.
