Former Strasbourg attacker Stéphane Bahoken has officially joined fellow Ligue 1 side Angers SCO, per Angers’ website. The Cameroonian international joins Angers on a free from the east of France, with his contract in Strasbourg expiring at the end of June. Bahoken has signed on with Les Scoïstes until 2022.
Bahoken will have big shoes to fill in the West, as former Angers’ key man Karl Toko Ekambi has left the club following a prolific season. Villarreal-bound Toko Ekambi netted 17 goals in 37 appearances for Angers in league play this past season, meaning Bahoken’s 5 in 17 for Strasbourg will have to be improved upon.
Despite a comparative lack of goals, Bahoken’s experience will be an asset for his new side. The striker is an OGC Nice product and has seen significant action in the Scottish Premiership, National, Ligue 2, and Ligue 1.
Following the announcement from Angers, the Cameroonian attacker penned an emotional farewell note to the supporters of Strasbourg. Calling them his “Alsacian family,” Bahoken thanked the supporters, writing, “During my time at Strasbourg I have always worked hard for you and you’ve always given it back to me: the proof being the chant in my name, which went straight to my heart and which gave me wings to do my best.”
Having missed out on World Cup qualification with his nation, Bahoken will likely be able to acclimate faster to life in Angers this summer.
