United Rugby Championship: Stormers sweating on Evan Roos’ fitness

Back-row Evan Roos is an injury concern for the Stormers ahead of their United Rugby Championship (URC) encounter against the Dragons in Gqeberha on Saturday.

Roos started at number eight for the Springboks in their 27-13 triumph over England at Twickenham last weekend and Stormers forwards coach Rito Hlungwani revealed that the number eight injured a rib in that fixture.

Despite sustaining his injury during the early stages of that Test, Roos continued to play before being replaced in the 53rd minute.

He even returned to the playing field in the 73rd minute when Springbok captain Siya Kolisi was forced off the field for a head injury assessment (HIA).

“Our doctor informed us about Evan Roos,” Hlungwani told Sport24 on Monday, adding, “He’s going to go for scans as soon as he lands and then we’ll have the diagnosis and feedback.”

Roos, who was the standout performer in the inaugural URC, was making only his third appearance for South Africa at the weekend.

Vital player for the Stormers

The Stormers will be hoping his injury is not too serious as he is a vital cog in their machine.

“We’re not sure if it’s broken or not,” added Hlungwani. “Once we hear from our specialist, we’ll be able to give the correct information.”

The Stormers are currently in fourth position in the URC standings and after their clash against the Dragons they will turn their attentions to the Champions Cup where they face Clermont Auvergne in their tournament opener on December 10.
