Following a public records request being filed by Tuscaloosa Patch ahead of the in-person interviews with the City Council on Thursday, City Administrator Glenda Webb said the current Council narrowed the list of candidates down to three.

The candidates are Anwar Aiken, co-owner of The Grand Event; Danny Higdon, chief school financial officer for the Tuscaloosa County School System; and retired Tuscaloosa Police Captain Gary Leddo.

As Patch previously reported, the candidate chosen by the Council will fill out the remainder of former District 5 Councilman Jeff Hogg’s unexpired term, which is up for election again in 2025.

If the council is unable to reach a consensus on a candidate, the appointment will be made by the governor. This will be the second appointment of a council member during the current term, following the appointment of Karl Wiggins last year to fill the District 3 seat after Mayor John Hinton ascended to his current office.

During that interview process for District 3, the Council was unable to settle on a candidate and saw Gov. Kay Ivey appoint Wiggins to the seat.

Interviews for the candidates are set for Thursday at 5 p.m. in Northport City Hall.
