Metal Monkey Co-Founder Looks To Create Community, Connection

ROMEOVILLE, IL — Metal Monkey Brewing co-founder Brandi Camp is looking to use her experiences and her business’ space to bring more people together.

Camp and her partners founded the brewery in her hometown of Romeoville in 2016. Camp had to step away from her role for a couple of years, due to financial and insurance reasons, as well as health issues.

In early 2021, Camp felt herself slipping into a depression and lost more than fifty pounds. The weight loss led her to find a lump in her breast, and she was diagnosed with breast cancer, underwent a double mastectomy, and recovered physically, but still felt isolated and lonely.

During her cancer treatment, she found different classes and sessions revolving around self-care and expression.

Camp told Patch that she attended many of the classes at SoderWorld, a wellness center in Willowbrook.

“It was really nice to have a safe space,” she told Patch. However, the center did have to cap the amount of people who could attend classes due to limited space.

Camp realized that she had the perfect opportunity, and she had plenty of space to offer. The brewery has about 1,000 to 2,000 square feet of space that could be used for different community-focused events.

Camp said the brewery has regulars, and many friends and family members also spend a lot of time supporting the business.

“[For people] struggling with loneliness, isolation, [I wanted] a safe place to have deep, meaningful conversations,” Camp said.

“I wanted to bring those two things together, and just share more with people,” she added.

The first event is planned for Friday at the brewery, 515 Anderson Drive, Suite 900. The music therapy event will be a walk-in event.

Camp said she plans to ramp up a lot more events in June, including drum circles, breath work and more.

“I just want to connect, talk, think more; get people interacting again,” she said.

Events will be posted on Metal Monkey’s Facebook and website.
