Dubai: A Grade four student in Lucknow, India, was so addicted to online games that he stole thousands of rupees from his father’s account to support his habit.

According to a report by news magazine India Today’s website, the father grew worried as he noticed unauthorised transactions and approached the local cybercrime unit to lodge a complaint only to find out his son’s role in the crime.

The student managed to take out Indian rupees 35,000 (Dh1,795) from his father’s account in one year.

The child managed to transfer the money by opening a Paytm account in December 2018 on his father’s mobile phone and withdrew large sums by linking it to his father’s bank account.

Paytm is an Indian e-commerce payment system and a company that provides digital wallet services.

According to India Today’s report, when the police began an investigation, the cyber cell told him that the money was transferred using his own phone number, surprising both the authorities and the complainant.

As the investigation began, it led to the possibility that the child might have done it and upon police confrontation, the child reportedly admitted to the act.

After the truth came out, the student admitted his mistake and was very scared. He was afraid that his father might beat him, reported India Today.

Police personnel at the Hazratganj station and cyber cell counseled the child and sent him home. Hazratganj, is a major shopping area situated in the city of Lucknow in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
