80 girls flee Bihar school after forced to perform indecent acts

Patna: Authorities in Bihar have ordered an investigation after 80 girl students fled the hostel of a government-run school for girls on being repeatedly forced to massage their hostel official and also clean toilet of her official residence.

All the girl students were staying in the hostel of Kasturba Gandhi School located in Bhojpur district. Some 100 girl students were enrolled in the school of which 80 were staying at the hostel.

###

The incident came to light after two girls fled their hostel last week after complaining of regular torture by the hostel warden Geeta Rani. The absconding girls were later caught by the local villagers who handed them over to the police. It was then that the shocking details came to light.

“Male members would often visit the residence of the warden madam around midnight. The madam threatened us with dire consequences if we revealed it to anyone,” one of the girls who fled the hostel told the media. The girls alleged that a local village council chief would reach the warden’s residence at midnight and stay with the warden.

They alleged they were often called by the warden to massage her body and were also engaged in doing personal work for her. “We were forced to clean her toilet and do personal works,” the girls alleged.

“We have arrested all the five accused persons in this connection and sent them to jail,” the local Bhojpur district superintendent of police Sushil Kumar said by phone on Monday. He said the statements of the girls have also been recorded in the court and further legal procedures were on.

“Apart from this, an investigation has been ordered by the district magistrate,” the police official said. Reports said an internal investigation conducted by the authorities have found the allegations levelled by the girls to be true. It also found that two inmates and two women illegally stayed in the premises without entry in the visitor register.

The revelations by the girls soon went viral in the media as the remaining girls too fled their homes, anxious about their safety. Many parents rushed to the hostel and carried their daughters home and demanded adequate safety for girls at such places.

The fresh incident has once again put a big question mark over safety of poor girls in government institutes. Earlier as many as 34 girls were allegedly raped at a government-funded care home being run by a non-governmental organisation in Muzaffarpur. The Supreme Court is now monitoring the case being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
