2 Years After Fire, Church Thanks Bayville Chief For Help

BERKELEY, NJ — Ocean Gate Church, also known as Breakout Ministries, celebrated its 100th anniversary this past September. It almost didn’t happen due to a fire that broke out in the church just over two years ago. To share the church’s gratitude, Pastor Phil Salerno presented the former Bayville Fire Chief Ken Anderson with a certificate, honoring the work the fire department did that day to save the church.

“Because of your total commitment, dedication and quick response, we were able to rebuild our church and celebrate on this day, Sept. 28, 2024,” Salerno said as he presented the certificate at a recent Township Council meeting. He said that the Bayville Fire Department’s efforts saved the church “from total destruction.”

It was July 14, 2022, when the historic church caught fire. But thanks to the quick work of Ocean Gate and Bayville firefighters, the blaze was contained to the church’s basement.

“It’s an honor to serve our community,” Anderson said, who has been with the fire department for 30 years, serving as chief for several years. A few years ago, he moved to a fire coordinator position, and was there the night of the fire as deputy county fire coordinator.

“It’s very hard for me to stand here, because I don’t like when people say thank you,” Anderson said. “It’s our job.”

He said the fire department is a second family for many.

“When times are bad, it’s a good place to be. When times are good, it’s a good place to be,” Anderson said.
