Secaucus Family Homeless After Fire On Humboldt Street

SECAUCUS, NJ — There was a serious fire in a home on the 700 block of Humboldt Street Tuesday morning, and the family that lived there is currently homeless.

The fire broke out at 4:18 a.m. Tuesday in the home’s basement, said Secaucus Mayor Mike Gonnelli. The fire is believed to have started in the dryer area, and it was an electrical fire.

The home had taken on about six inches of water in the basement in Sunday night’s heavy rain, and the mayor said it is not known if the flooding in the basement contributed to the fire. Many homes in Secaucus take in water in their basements during heavy rain.

The Secaucus fire department responded and flames could be seen shooting out of the home’s first-story windows. Smoke was very heavy in the basement and one Secaucus firefighter was injured when he fell down the basement stairs, said the mayor. He is now recovering.

The home was badly damaged in fire and water damage, and the family that lives there is currently being helped by the town. The Secaucus Emergency Fund is providing the family with food, water, clothing and trying to find them temporary housing.
