With First Street Market, Gilson and crew hope to offer a “multi-purpose space unique not only to the neighborhood but in all of Cambridge.”

It will feature a year-round, weekly indoor farmers market with a Mediterranean-inspired café, functional demonstration bar and community space. Officials hope that combination can make First Street Market “the epicenter of commerce, events, and community in the rapidly growing First Street neighborhood.”

AMBA will serve as the Mediterranean-inspired café in the market with a menu ranging from rotisserie chicken to fresh pastries from chef Brian Mercury. A beverage program featuring La Colombe coffee alongside various wines, beers and cocktails will join the food program.

Taking its name from a sauce that started in India and made its way through the Middle East, AMBA celebrates the diverse flavors of the Mediterranean region, spanning from the eastern shores to the Atlantic coast. The centerpiece of AMBA’s menu is its rotisserie chicken, served with an array of condiments and sides.

It is also an inexpensive option for the Boston metro, with a breakfast shawarma listed for $8, a breakfast wrap for $10 and multiple sandwiches and salads below the $15 price point.

Amba hosted a “soft opening” on Wednesday with extended hours expected soon. For now, Amba is open Wednesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
