Katz died July 21, when a car collided with his SUV when he was attempting to change lanes on East Avenue. A Livermore Police Department investigation alleged that Emilio Cruz, a 27-year-old man from Stanislaus County, lost control while driving erratically. In February, Cruz was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
Katz opened his eponymous winery in 1998 and named it after his 96-year-old grandfather, who devoted more than 50 years to home winemaking, according to the winery’s website. The winery is “dedicated exclusively to single-vineyard wines that capture the essence of each vineyard.” When he passed, tributes flooded in praising him as an excellent winemaker, boss, father, and community member.
