Were Violent Crimes Near Burr Ridge?

BURR RIDGE, IL – Over the last couple of weeks, authorities have reported two major crimes in the neighborhoods southwest of Burr Ridge’s limit.

In one case, a woman was accused of killing her twin brother. In the other, police said a man fired a gun and then barricaded himself from officers.

Both incidents were in unincorporated neighborhoods with Willowbrook mailing addresses. It was the same area as last year’s mass shooting.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office has referred to the neighborhoods as unincorporated Willowbrook. So have media outlets, including Patch. That has often been met with objections from Willowbrook residents.

The alleged killing took place on Mockingbird Lane, which is 1.7 miles away from Willowbrook’s southern boundary. It is a quarter of a mile from Burr Ridge, which is on the other side of Route 83.

As for the reported firing of shots, that occurred in the Kingery Quarter apartment complex. It is 1.5 miles from the Willowbrook border and four-tenths of a mile from the village of Burr Ridge.

In the latest stories, Patch has referred to the locations as either “near Burr Ridge” or “Burr Ridge area” in headlines.

Burr Ridge readers have questioned the wording, saying Patch would be more correct to say unincorporated Willowbrook.

That designation would be technically true, but given Burr Ridge’s closeness, it seems like an effective reference point for readers.
