ENFIELD, CT — An early morning fire at a house on Washington Road Friday temporarily displaced five people who escaped and four dogs who were rescued by fire personnel.
The fire at an 1,100 square foot raised ranch-style home at 374 Washington Road was reported at 4:24 a.m. The blaze started on the exterior of the structure and made its way inside, according to Shaker Pines Fire Chief Jim Nolan.
Mutual aid from all five Enfield fire departments assisted at the fire, which was brought under control within about a half-hour. Several chickens in a coop under a porch did not survive the flames, Nolan said.

The house, built in 1964 according to town property records, is temporarily uninhabitable. The American Red Cross is assisting family members, while relatives are taking care of the dogs, Nolan said.
An investigation by the Shaker Pines fire marshal into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
