mobanmarketLONG BEACH, CA — After residents expressed their concerns following a stabbing attack in Belmont Shore on Tuesday, Long Beach District 3 Councilmember Kristina Duggan scheduled a community meeting.
The meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. at Bay Shore Community Congressional Church and will be hosted by Duggan, City Manager Tom Modica and Police Chief Wally Hebeish.
Just before noon on Tuesday, Long Beach Police Department officers opened fire on a man suspected of assaulting four people, including a 2-year-old child, and stabbing one man near 2nd Street and Livingston Avenue.

According to LBPD spokesperson Michael Pennino, the suspect first approached a man and a woman near a playground popular with young families and assaulted the pair before walking into the park. The suspect then approached another man who was holding a child inside the park and assaulted him, causing him to drop the 2-year-old according to Pennino.
Police said the suspect then made his way to 2nd Street where he confronted another man in front of a business and stabbed him. Officers arrived at the scene and confronted the suspect, who was still holding the screwdriver.

“An officer-involved shooting occurred when the suspect, who was armed with a weapon, attempted to enter a residential location,” Pennino said.
The suspect was identified a day after the incident as Mario Najara, a 31-year-old man who authorities said was experiencing homelessness. Najara was arrested and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. His bail was set at $1 million.
