Eddie Jones: Steve Borthwick was ‘probably right’ in his scathing assessment of England

Wallabies head coach Eddie Jones has admitted Steve Borthwick was “probably right” in his brutal assessment of England following their loss to Scotland last weekend.

It was not the ideal start to Borthwick’s time in the hot seat as his England side fell short against Scotland in a 29-23 loss at Twickenham, handing the visitors their third consecutive Calcutta Cup.

‘Not good at anything’

Borthwick did not hold back and claimed that he inherited an England side who “weren’t good at anything” from Jones, who recently left the role.

Jones was sacked at the end of last year after an inadequate season at the helm of the Red Rose, ending his long tenure with the side.

The Australian admits the team was not quite there during the end of his reign and underlined the risks of expanding the attack with the England set-up.

The veteran also believes that Borthwick will come right with the side but joked that he has strong enough shoulders to deal with the Englishman continuing to blame him.

“Well he’s probably right and that’s part of the problem,” Jones told the podcast EDDIE.

“We were trying to morph a team that had had a very good set-piece and very good kicking game.

“The way that the game is played at the moment, that will win you games but it’s probably not good enough to be World Cup champions.

Expanding attack is risky

“And so expanding the attack sometimes takes away from your strengths and they’re going through that difficult period now where they’re trying to get that balance right in their game.

“But Steve will fix it. There’s no doubt he’ll fix it. And keep blaming me. That’s all right, I’ve got a pretty strong back and pretty strong shoulders to absorb that.”

England’s next task is a tricky clash against an improving Italy side at Twickenham this weekend in round two of the Six Nations.
