PLAYER RATINGS | Lorient 1-2 OGC Nice, Kasper Schmeichel saves Nice with Ross Barkley anonymous

Both teams went into game at opposite ends of the Ligue 1 table, positions neither were used to. But Lorient, who could gave moved to joint second with a win, were beaten by a flagging Nice after a string of smart Kasper Schmeichel first half saves kept his team in a game. The hosts ran the first half but were only able to score the once before a piece of individual brilliance from Youcef Atal, who skipped in from the right to fire a shot into the bottom corner, and a deflected effort from Gaëtan Laborde proved enough for Nice to overturn that slender lead having imposed themselves after the break.

LORIENT – 1 (Ouattara 18)

Yvon Mvogo, 5

Gedeon Kalulu, 6

Julien Laporte, 5

Montassar Talbi, 5

Vincent Le Goff, 4

Bonke Innocent, 4

Enzo Le Fée, 7 – His cute passing, pinpoint deliveries – one of which assisted the opener – and mobility in midfield helped him run the game for the first hour against a group of far more experienced midfielders and still did enough for 7 despite fading a little.

Julien Ponceau, 6 – Often led sharp counters after his team won the ball back high up the pitch and he often used the ball smartly to create chances. The youngster offered a waspish intensity Nice’s midfield couldn’t handle for the first 30 minutes but faded after the break.

Théo Le Bris, 5

Stéphane Diarra, 7 – Subbed early around the hour mark but was a constant threat in the first half, terrorising his full-back on Nice’s left and was unfortunate not to create a goal for his side.

Dango Ouattara, 6

Others: Moffi 5, Boisgard 5, Cathline 5, Aouchiche 5, Kone 5.

NICE – 2 (Atal 61, Laborde 69)

Kasper Schmeichel, 7 – Made four important saves in the first half an hour, two of which – a one-on-one stop from Diarra and a lightning reaction save after a deflection – were especially good. His poor form in general has been exaggerated and he kept Nice in the game here.

Youcef Atal, 7 – The only Nice player to match Lorient’s intensity and bite for long periods and often tried to create something by charging in from the right. One such run nearly resulted in a superb individual goal before the break before he beat three men to rifle a shot into the corner for 1-1 on the hour.

Jean-Clair Todibo, 4

Dante, 5

Melvin Bard, 4

Pablo Rosario, 5

Mario Lemina, 5

Hicham Boudaoui, 4

Billal Brahimi, 3

Ross Barkley, 2 – Played an attacking role just off Pépé but was anonymous for the first 45 minutes before being hooked at the break after one of the worst misses of the Ligue 1 season so far, scooping over from four yards out having arrived at the back post after Atal’s cross beat Lorient keeper Mvogo.

Nicolas Pépé, 5

Others: Laborde 6, Lotomba 6, Ramsey 5, Bryan 5, Thuram 5.
