Laurent Blanc on Rayan Cherki: “It’s not easy to rely on one player to score. Rayan Cherki must be more effective.”

Lyon swept Chambéry out of the way in a 3-0 victory in the Coupe de France. OL may have qualified and advanced in the competition, but struggled at times in a match that you would have expected OL to win fairly easily.

In a post-match press conference head coach Laurent Blanc stated, “The first period can give some satisfaction, but we were less good after half-time, especially in the use of the ball. But in Cup, the main thing is to qualify. We don’t win many matches but when you win one 3-0, you have to analyze it, as always, but there are positive elements.”

OL was a bit of a one-man attack with all three of the goals coming from an Alexandre Lacazette hat-trick. The French coach praised his striker explaining, “Lacazette is happy when we put balls in the box for him. He is a surface player who has always scored. Our goals have been well done, but I would like us to have more situations like this. When it comes to fruition on the day of match day, you have to appreciate it even if you would like it to happen more often.”

The former France coach was not all smiles. He has been critical of his young star Rayan Cherki. However, his comments seem more of a strategic tool to push his up-and-coming academy product. The coach spoke about the player explaining, “It’s not easy, or good to rely on one player to score. Rayan Cherki in particular must be more effective because he can also score a lot.”

Lyon, in the league, has struggled on both sides of the ball. While the defensive issues may seem more glaring the attack has been “boom-or-bust” and just as inconsistent. If Cherki can develop into the scorer many think he can be, it will not only serve his numbers but open up play for some of the other attackers. Currently, the OL academy product only has 1 league goal this season.
