Kylian Mbappé breaks new records with five goals in Coupe de France game

Kylian Mbappé (24) is the gift that keeps on giving, as he broke yet more records in last night’s 7-0 win at Pays de Cassel in the Coupe de France. Mbappé scored five of the seven goals, becoming the first Paris-Saint-Germain player to score a quintuple during a single game in official competitions.

After their second trip to the Stade Bollaert-Delelis in 2023, PSG are now through to the round of 16 in the French Cup. Their last visit to RC Lens’ stadium was less fruitful, as they lost 3-1 to Les Sang et Or in Ligue 1 on New Year’s Day.

It was questionable as to whether Les Parisiens, who are set to face Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 next month, would bring their star players to a side who are in the sixth-tier of French football. Christophe Galtier was clearly unphased by the potential for injuries, as he fielded a starting 11 that also included Neymar, Sergio Ramos, and young starlet Hugo Ekitiké. It took the visitors just 29 minutes to open the scoring, as Mbappé registered an 11-minute hat-trick before the break. He added two more in the second half.

In doing so, the 24-year-old broke several records. He became the first player to score 29 goals for a professional club in the Coupe de France since Jean-Pierre Papin in 1998. He also became the first player to score 27 goals for a single club in the Coupe de France since AS Monaco’s Delio Onnis in 1980. The 2018 World Cup winner also became the first player since Michel Platini in 1975 to score five goals in a Coupe de France round-of-32 game.
