Triple H recently spoke with Sky Sports in the UK about the ongoing controversy surrounding NFL stars kneeling for the national anthem. The conversation was reported on by fellow UK-based publication EXPRESS.
Levesque, who outside of his iconic WWE character is the real-life Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative for the largest wrestling company in the world, noted that he could only speak for his own personal opinions, but ultimately stood by his talents’ first amendment rights.
“…if it was me I would stand for my national anthem … But I and WWE certainly respect the rights of everybody’s first amendment right of freedom of speech, their right to peacefully protest and do what is meaningful to them.”
If you’re out of the loop on this particular social issue, it started during the 2016 NFL season when former San Francisco 49ers star Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem. The quarterback kneeled out of protest to justices against the African-American community, primarily the escalating presence of racially-biased police brutality in the United States.
The situation had largely blown over in mainstream media, but President Donald Trump brought it back full force recently by sending out a series of tweets condemning NFL players who took a knee during the anthem. He then doubled down during a live speech, going as far as calling anyone who kneels a “son of a bitch”, trashing the NFL for its “massively” down ratings, and demanding that team owners fire those in question.
Of course, all Trump’s comments did was light a fire under the league, with players from virtually every team taking a knee, remaining in the locker room, or raising fists in defiance during “The Star-Spangled Banner”.
As far as Triple H is concerned, the 14-time world champion questions “whether there would be a better way to do that,” searching for a solution that “maybe wouldn’t offend others”.
Wrestling fans may be aware that President Trump has very close ties to the WWE and those that run the company. The billionaire television star once shaved Vince McMahon’s head bald on the grand stage of WrestleMania, and Triple H’s own mother-in-law Linda McMahon is currently serving somewhat ironically on Trump’s cabinet as Administrator of the Small Business Administration.
