Kenny Omega vs Cody Rhodes Set For NJPW G1 Special in San Francisco; 4 Big Matches Announced

New Japan Pro Wrestling has officially announced that Kenny Omega will defend the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against the “American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes, in what will be The Cleaner’s first ever defense of his newly christened throne.

The two will actually headline the upcoming NJPW G1 Special taking place at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on July 7th, marking the first bout officially confirmed for the show.

As for Kazuchika Okada, who dropped the IWGP title this weekend at NJPW Dominion in perhaps the single greatest wrestling match this writer has ever seen, the “Rainmaker” will team with Will Ospreay to challenge the formidable duo of Tetsuya Naito and Bushi. So far, no update on whether or not Chris Jericho will be appearing at the Cow Palace to defend the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, but that at least takes away the possibility of a straight-up rematch.

Also announced is a rematch for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions as the Young Bucks will defend against Evil and Sanada, and “Switchblade” Jay White will defend the IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Championship against Juice Robinson, who picked up a surprise pin over the champion at Dominion this weekend.
