NDSU’s Steven Monk Claims WWC Wrestler of the Week Award

OREM, Utah — North Dakota State University 165-pound senior Steven Monk (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance at the 2013 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The conference award was announced Tuesday, Dec. 31, by the league.

Monk earned NDSU’s first individual title at the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30, claiming a 4-2 decision over No. 4-ranked Nick Moore of Iowa in the 165-pound championship match. The fifth-ranked and top-seeded Bison senior registered a 7-2 decision over fifth-seeded Cooper Moore of Northern Iowa in the semifinals. UNI’s Moore is the only wrestler to have defeated Monk this season, but the Bison standout swung the season series to 2-1 in his favor with his second win over Moore on Monday.

Monk began his title run at Midlands by winning his first two matches via first-period pins. He then followed those up with a 1-0 decision over ninth-seeded Josh Holdswourth of Columbia in the quarterfinals. In all, Monk went a perfect 5-0 at the renowned tourney. The NDSU 165-pounder improved to 16-1 on the season and 114-23 in his career — a mark that ranks him second in school history in wins.

The conference honor is Monk’s second of the season and sixth of his career.
