Now over a week removed from winning the WWE Universal Championship, Kevin Owens spoke to SLAM! Sports about the aftermath of his title win and the journey to WWE success that many thought he would never achieve.
Owens was asked who greeted him backstage after winning the title, and though he couldn’t mention his longtime friend by name, Owens seemed to reveal a moment he shared with Sami Zayn.
“The first one, I don’t want to just say who it is, but I think people can figure it out. It was very emotional because in a lot of ways, we both achieved this. I don’t know how to describe that. It’s our title, in a way, if that makes any sense.” Owens said.
And in addition to his interaction with Zayn, Owens also shared what he said to Vince McMahon after winning the title.
“It’s a special moment to get to tell Vince McMahon that you’re not going to regret this and have him say, ‘I’m sure I won’t.’ It was just really something,” Owens said.
Owens credited Triple H for taking a chance on him when critics felt that he didn’t have the necessary look to thrive in WWE. He said that people can say whatever they want about Triple H handing him the title, but it was a special moment for him.
Also in the interview, Owens talked about how important his family has been to his success, his relationship with Jimmy Jacobs, and wanting to main event WWE’s upcoming Survivor Series pay-per-view in his home country of Canada.
