NEWNAN, GA — A man is being credited with potentially stopping a mass shooting at a Newnan, Georgia, bar. Ben McCoy, who is being treated at a hospital, took several bullets while distracting a disgruntled man who was about to walk into Fat Boys Bar and Grill with a handgun.
On Aug. 17, Kevintez Mathewis was at Fat Boys, located at 485 Highway 16 West in Newnan when he was kicked out for “aggravating patrons,” a release from the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office says.
Bar security is seen in the video, obtained by FOX5 below, physically removing Mathewis from the bar, reportedly after having been kicked out and sneaking back in several times, police say. He “became enraged,” and told security he was going to get a gun and “shoot the place up,” the release says.
In the video, Ben McCoy, an employee of the bar who wasn’t working at the time, is seen in the video. As Mathewis is believed to have made the threats, McCoy is seen going to the back of his SUV, grabbing a rifle from the rear and putting it in the back seat.
Mathewis left the scene and returned with a handgun, apparently retrieved from his friend’s car, the release says.
At this point McCoy was sitting in the driver’s seat of the SUV with the rifle in hand. As Mathewis walked by, gun in hand, McCoy apparently drew his attention. Mathewis shot twice into the car, through the windshield, the release says.
McCoy then got out and went to the back of the car. Mathewis followed, police say, and shot McCoy multiple times. Mathewis grabbed McCoy’s rifle and ran into the nearby woods, the release says.

A deputy and his K9 partner tracked Mathewis down and arrested him. Police recovered both weapons.
Authorities charged Mathewis with aggravated assault, but further charges are pending.
