Four North Dakota State Wrestlers Set for NCAA Championships on March 15-17

North Dakota State (7-10, 1-7 #Big12WR) will send four wrestlers — 125 Paul Bianchi, 133 Cam Sykora, 157 Clay Ream and 165 Andrew Fogarty — to compete at the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships scheduled for Thursday, March 15 through Saturday, March 17, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

North Dakota State’s 133 Cam Sykora, a redshirt sophomore from Wheaton, Minn., leads NCAA Division I with 12 tech falls in a time of 47:59 … Lock Haven 141 Kyle Shoop has 12 techs in 53:53 thru matches March 4.

Bison at 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships

North Dakota State 125 Josh Rodriguez’s bid for All-American honors fell short as he lost in the consolation round of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships (March 16-18) at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis … Rodriguez finished 2-2 at the tournament, while 133 Cam Sykora and 165 Andrew Fogarty were both 1-2, and 157 Clay Ream and 285 Ben Tynan each went 0-2 … Ream was named the NCAA Elite 90 Award winner for the second straight season … NDSU tied for 47th place with three points in the team standings … Best NCAA Division I team finish came in 2014 when the Bison were 21st with 20.5 points.

NDSU and Division I All-Americans

North Dakota State looks to add a name or two on the Division I All-American list that includes Bill Demaray (1977, 7th 177 pounds), Lee Petersen (1973, 4th 142; 1974, 7th 142), Brad Rheingans (1975, 4th 190), Mike Langlais (1984, 6th 150),Pat Johannes (1988, 7th 177), Trent Sprenkle (2013, 5th 125), Steven Monk (2014, 3rd 165), Kurtis Julson (2015, 8th, 174) and Hayden Zillmer (2015, 8th, 184) … Nine different athletes have earned 10 Division I All-America honors … North Dakota State has 162 All-Americans overall include 30 Division II national champions. 

NDSU at the 2018 Big 12 Championships

North Dakota State 157 Clay Ream and 165 Andrew Fogarty were both runner-up, while 133 Cam Sykora and 285 Dan Stibral both placed fifth and 125 Paul Bianchi was seventh at the 2018 Big 12 Wrestling Championships on March 3-4 at the BOK Center in Tulsa … North Dakota State placed fifth in the team standings with 57 points

NDSU Places Nine on Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling Team

North Dakota State placed nine student-athletes on the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling team announced Feb. 28 by the conference office … Sixty-three wrestlers make up the first team including Bison repeat selections, 149 Kyle Gliva, 157Clay Ream and 197 Cordell Eaton … Ream is a three-time selection, while Eaton (2017) and Gliva (2016) both make their second appearance … Rounding out NDSU’s first team picks are 125 Paul Bianchi, 174 Dylan Urbach, and 285 Dan Stibral… Named to the second team were 174/184 Nick Knutson, 184 Tyler McNutt, and 184 Cole Witzig … McNutt is a three-time selection.

Ream Tied for No. 20 on NDSU All-Time Win Chart

North Dakota State 157-pound redshirt senior Clay Ream at 94-40 overall, enters this weekend tied for No. 20 on the Bison career win charts with Division II national champion 150 Mark Reimnitz (94-20-1, 1971-74) … Up ahead is No. 18 College Division national champion/Olympian 190 Brad Rheingans (96-11, 1971-75) and D2 national champion 157 Wayne Mooney (96-30, 1996-00).

Five North Dakota State wrestlers were listed in the final NCAA Division I coaches’ panel rankings and second ratings percentage index (RPI) released March 8 including 125 Paul Bianchi (T28th Coaches/30th RPI), 133 Cam Sykora(T27th/29th), 149 Kyle Gliva (—/30th), 157 Clay Ream (9th/12th) and 165 Andrew Fogarty (17th/28th).
