Nashua Man Pops The Question After Kissers Break Mistletoe Record

MERRIMACK, NH — Hundreds of New Hampshire residents assisted three Anheuser-Busch brewery locations Saturday in breaking a world record for the most couples kissing under the mistletoe.

The company held kissing events at St. Louis, Missouri, Fort Collins, Colorado, and Merrimack in an attempt to gather enough neckers to break the Guinness World Records titles – while enjoying the romantic setting of thousands of holiday lights. At the end of the warm, cross country embrace, the company broke two records – most couples kissing and most couples kissing in a single venue.

At the Merrimack event, more than 150 attendees were also able to witness a sweet surprise as one participant proposed to his longtime girlfriend.

Patrick Flaven of Nashua said he had always wanted to get married around Christmastime and was looking for a place, with lights, to propose. He spoke to officials at A-B in Merrimack and devised a plan in which the couple would be invited up to the stage because they won a free gift. Flaven, who is a real estate agent at Century 21 Cardinal in the Gate City, then would be given a mic to pop the question to his now-fiancée, Luciana Echavarria.

The plan went off without a hitch.

“It was pretty cool,” Flaven told Patch. “She kinda thought something was up because going to a holiday light event is not something I would do. She even had her nails done. But she was really surprised and thought we were only going up (to the stage) for the gift.”

When asked if he was worried about whether she would reject the proposal in front of so many people, Flaven said, “It was a slight thought, (but) we’ve been together six or seven years now and have been talking about it.”

Altogether, 896 couples were counted necking at the three locations – surpassing the previous record by 57. In St. Louis, 480 couples participated breaking the previous single-location record of 448.

“Anheuser-Busch Brewery Lights is an annual tradition that brings joy to so many people, and this year we wanted to create new excitement and remind people to open their hearts this holiday season,” said Kathryn Sattler, the head of Beer Category and Community at Anheuser-Busch. “With this record-breaking opportunity, we wanted to help everyone build real connections in their communities, their neighborhoods and with the ones they love. And thanks to 896 coming together across the country, we certainly spread some love this holiday.”

More than 250,000 lights are on display in Merrimack this year, the most ever. The brewery will feature the light display as well as many other family activities through Dec. 29. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Sunday, and 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
