#1 St. Cloud State continues season with trip to BVU Open

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (4-0, 1-0 NSIC) will continue its 2019-20 season with a road trip to the BVU Open at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa on Dec. 7. The matches will begin at 9 a.m. at the BVU Open.

Of note, the Huskies were originally scheduled to wrestle at the Dragon Open on Dec. 7, but the team opted to switch venues and travel to the BVU Open this weekend. Live stats for the BVU Open will be available through TrackWrestling.com.

SCSU will then return to its 2019-20 dual meet schedule on Dec. 13 with a conference home meet at Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. at 7:00 p.m.

SCSU WRESTLING HEADLINES:

  • The Huskies received a number one ranking in the latest NWCA Division II Coaches Poll, which was released on Nov. 27. The Huskies were previously ranked #2 in the nation in the preseason poll for 2019-20 behind Pitt-Johnstown. A 31-6 win over Pitt-Johnstown at the 2019 Northeast Dual on Nov. 9 by the Huskies provided the points needed for SCSU to move up to the top spot in the NWCA DII national poll. Of note, Pitt-Johnstown is now ranked #4. McKendree is ranked #2 in the last poll and Nebraska Kearney is ranked #3.
  • Individually, the Huskies had eight wrestlers ranked nationally in the latest poll. The group is led by Jake Barzowkski, who maintained his number one national ranking at 157-pounds for the Huskies. A returning All-American, Barzowski is a resident of Park Ridge, Ill. and he owns a perfect 4-0 record.
  • SCSU also had two wrestlers ranked number two in the nation this week with James Pleski ranked second in the national polls at 149-pounds and Devin FitzPatrick ranked second in the nation at 165-pounds for the Huskies. A three-time All-American at SCSU, Pleski currently owns a 3-1 record this season with his lone loss coming against #1 ranked Chirs Eddins of Pitt-Johnstown in 2019-20. A returning All-American, FitzPatrick is 4-0 this season at 165-pounds for SCSU.
  • A trio of Huskies are ranked #3 in the nation this week. At 133-pounds, Garrett Vos is ranked third in the national polls. He is 4-0 this season for the Huskies and is one of SCSU’s returning All-America wrestlers this season after placing at the 2019 NCAA DII championships. At 174-pounds, two-time All-American Kolton Eischens is ranked #3 this winter. He stands at 3-0 this season for the Huskies. SCSU’s third #3 grappler is Tyree Overton, who is ranked third nationally at 184-pounds. An All-American for SCSU in 2018, Overton is 3-0 for the Huskies in 2019-20.
  • At 141-pounds, SCSU’s Garrrett Aldrich (Albert Lea, Minn.) is currently ranked seventh with a record of 4-0 and rookie Ezayah Oropeza (Burnsville, Minn./Rosemount H.S.) made his national poll debut at 285-pounds this week with a #11 ranking in the poll. Oropeza is 4-0 in 2019-20 for SCSU.
  • SCSU has won NCAA DII championships in 2019, 2018, 2016 and 2015. The Huskies has won NSIC championships in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012. One of the nation’s premiere DII programs, St. Cloud State has also won NWCA DII National Dual titles in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2013 and 2012 along with NCAA DII Super Regional team titles in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2013, 2012 and 2011.
  • SCSU has announced the addition of eight new recruits to its roster for the upcoming 2020-21 season. The group of new Huskies includes Blake Thomsen (Neola, Iowa), Bryan Fitzpatrick (Mahtomedi, Minn.), Cody Minor (Green Bay, Wisc.), Daniel Valeria (Crystal Lake, Ill.), Kaleb Haase (Morton, Minn.), Owen Bjerga (Motley, Minn.), Paxton Creese (Shakopee, Minn.) and Shaeden Scheidt (Canton, S.D.). Of note, Bryan FitzPatrick is the brother of current Huskies Jake FitzPatrick and Devin FitzPatrick.
  • Garrett Vos was recently named a Wolters Kluwer St. Cloud State Athlete of Month for Nov. 2019. Vos posted a perfect 4-0 record during the month of November and this included an 11-6 victory over number one ranked Tyler Warner of Pitt-Johnstown on Nov. 9.
