The European Commission is to impose anti-dumping duties on imports of biodiesel from Argentina and Indonesia, the European Commission announced yesterday (21 November).

An average additional duty of 24.6% for Argentina and 18.9% for Indonesia will be imposed. This follows a 15-month investigation carried out by the Commission which found that Argentinian and Indonesian biodiesel producers were dumping their products on the European market.

“The EU is open to Argentinian and Indonesian exports but we should not stay idle and tolerate structural raw material distortions,” said a Commission spokesman. “We are glad the Council [of Ministers] adopted the Commission proposal which is based on an objective investigation in line with World Trade Organization law. Now we can be reassured that our green energy sector is not under threat and will continue developing to the benefit of all Europeans.”

Argentinian and Indonesian companies have access to raw materials at prices that are artificially low compared to the global market prices available for EU biodiesel producers, the Commission said. This because of high export taxes imposed by Argentina and Indonesia on raw materials used in the production of biodiesel.

The Commission action was backed by EU member states earlier this week. The punitive measures will apply for five years.
