Today at Commission, London attack and solidarity with Portugal
Several EU countries sent fire-fighters to help their Portuguese colleagues.
At today’s European Commission midday briefing, chief spokesman Margaritis Schinas expressed extended sympathies to London and the British people after a man died and at least ten people were injured when a van struck pedestrians outside a mosque in the U.K. capital.
The Commission also expressed its solidarity with Portugal, where forest fires killed at least 60 people over the weekend. It announced it is coordinating efforts for to help Portuguese authorities, with firefighters from Italy, Spain and France deployed to help to tackle the fires.
Schinas also said Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker had sent a letter to French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe to congratulate him on President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist party winning a majority in parliament.
Schinas declined to answer a question on Brexit as the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier and his U.K. counterpart David Davis will hold a press conference on Monday evening after their first ever session of talks.
Ahead of the daily press conference, Commission first Vice President Frans Timmermans hosted a high-level meeting with representatives from philosophical and non-confessional organizations from across Europe to discuss EU values. Find the statement here.
