200,000 expected in Prague anti-government protest

Over 200,000 demonstrators are expected to take part in an anti-government mass rally starting in Prague’s Letná Plain later today, according to the organizers.

Demonstrators who will gather in the large central park overlooking the Vltava river, are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš over “multiple conflicts of interest.” They also object to the recent appointment of Marie Benešova, his close ally, as justice minister. Many presume she will not pursue criminal charges against the prime minister.

Protests have been held every week since April 30 when Babiš named Benešova for the post, a day after Czech police recommended the prime minister be charged with subsidy fraud involving €2 million in EU funds for his Stork’s Nest resort.

Another protest earlier this month drew 120,000 demonstrators — becoming the largest mass rally held in Prague after theVelvet Revolution 30 years ago. Almost 150,000 people expressed interest in today’s event’s Facebook page.

A preliminary European Commission audit found that Babiš’ Agrofert conglomerate illegitimately received EU funds. If the final report confirms these findings, the Czech Republic may have to return €17.5 million to the EU’s coffers.
