Inaugural fashion sees J Crew shares surge

What happens when America’s new First Lady dons a well known fashion brand to her husband’s inauguration? Said company’s shares soar 10 per cent as news of the Obama’s choice of designer is circulated across the globe. That is precisely what happened at J.Crew Group Inc as it made front page news in the fashion glossies.

First lady Michelle Obama wore J.Crew gloves, a sweater and skirt to different events; daughters Malia and Sasha wore coats, dresses and other items during various occasions; and even the new president wore a company-produced white satin bow tie to all the Inaugural Balls on Tuesday night.

While the items were made specifically for the Obamas, J.Crew said its customers can see highlights or similar items in upcoming seasons, although its website crashed Wednesday after being bombarded by curious consumers.
