'Let's just get more educated': Cardi B and Bernie Sanders team up for campaign video

Cardi B is feeling the Bern.

In a new video, filmed in a Detroit nail salon last month and released Thursday by Bernie Sanders’ campaign, the Bronx rapper quizzes the White House hopeful on a number of issues, including his plans for Dreamers and how he would bankroll proposals like Medicare for All, tuition-free college and canceling student debt.

Cardi B said that interest was high in these proposals, telling Sanders that a lot of people think that it’s impossible and a lot of people don’t want "extreme socialism.”

The rapper took questions from fans on social media, where she is known to pontificate about everything from where Americans’ taxpayer dollars go to the policies emanating from the White House.

“We have this bully as a president and the only way to take him out is somebody winning,” she tells Sanders in the video, which is part of a broader effort by the rapper to engage youth voters. “I want to tell my millions of followers: We’re here to educate you guys” she said, urging her fans to “get more educated.”

The duo dove into issues like police brutality, with Cardi B arguing that “it makes us feel worthless” to “constantly see our men getting killed every day.”

Still, she added, “I don’t want people thinking that we’re trying to attack the police. Because let me tell you something, there was this one time that I started to feel like I hate the police, they’re pigs. But there’s a lot of cops that go in their jobs and they want to protect their people.”

“We need police departments that look like the communities that they serve — we get rid of a lot of this militarization of the police department, which is a form of intimidating people,” Sanders replied.

She also asked Sanders about his call to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour, explaining that the issue was personal for her.

"For example, as a New Yorker — not now but when I was not famous, I felt like no matter how many jobs I get I wasn’t able to make ends meet,” she said, contending that statistics frequently touted by the White House like the unemployment rate don’t paint a complete picture of economic security.

They also discussed their fondness for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who Cardi said she admired for his perseverance on social issues despite taking office in the midst of a depression and a world war. “It’s just like, goddamn, I love him. He’s my favorite,” she said.

“Well I want to be your favorite after I’m elected,” Bernie replied.

The rapper doesn’t explicitly endorse Sanders in the video, who she’s praised effusively in the past, though she does sign off with a “Let’s feel the Bern!”
